Doula Language

Episode 188: What We Assume When We Say Trust Birth

The doula language we use shapes every client experience. It shapes what happens before we are hired, during labor, and long after birth ends.

“Trust birth.” “Trust your instincts.” These phrases live on our websites, in our consultations, and across our social content. Most of us have never stopped to question them.

Doula language is not neutral. It goes somewhere. How it is received is influenced by a client’s history, nervous system, and their relationship with their own body. For many, that history includes chronic illness, birth trauma, pregnancy loss, perinatal anxiety, systemic medical racism, or dismissed symptoms.

We can cause harm with these phrases without realizing it. Knowing a client’s history before using them leads to better connection and more effective support.

In this episode we cover the research on chronic conditions in pregnancy, documented rates of birth trauma, and the link between rising comorbidities and cesarean rates. In addition, we look at how these phrases impact postpartum clients and what we can do differently at every stage.

This is not about eliminating the concept of trust in one’s body or birth. It is about following the client’s lead rather than asking them to adopt a belief system that does not fit their experience.

Doula language is a skill. And like every skill, we can refine it.
