Episode 38: Developing Your Doula Voice – Part Two
Welcome to Part 2 of our Developing Your Doula Voice series. In part one we discussed the common fears and anxieties that those new to doula work commonly experience.
In this episode, we discuss strategies to overcome all the fears and anxieties that we discussed in episode one.
Building your foundation of informational resources takes time. But there are shortcuts that you can utilize to build a database of information. This will allow you to find the answers to your client’s questions. Yet at the same time, it’s ok to not have all the answers.
Emotional support may not be intuitive for everyone. Yet at the same time being able to be in tune with your client’s emotions and feelings is a key part of doula work. Establishing a rapport with your clients is essential. The emotional connection is what will allow the physical connection to feel natural. As well as building your client’s trust in you.
Physical support can be the most difficult type of support to provide for some doulas. How we were raised can play a big part in how comfortable one is with touch. Some families are high touch, while others may be low to no-touch. Additionally, touch may not be comfortable for a doula due to their own traumas or life experiences.
Come join us as we discuss our tried and true approaches to these methods of support. As well as providing other suggestions for you to find your own voice and your practice style in a way that feels most authentic to you!
