Episode 44: Part Time Doula
Can I be a part-time doula? How do I transition from a full or part-time job into doula work? These are common questions in the doula community.
We each come to this work from our own unique perspectives. For some, full-time doula work is the ultimate goal. For others, supporting growing families while maintaining a full or part-time job is the desired goal.
While passion is the foundation of this work, many individuals do not realize that becoming a doula is more than just supporting clients. It is starting a business.
For many, building a doula business can take a good 12-18 months to become sustainable without outside support. For those who desire to become a full-time doula, the process may take longer than expected. Finances will often dictate one’s ability to pursue this work full time, right from the start. It is not uncommon for these individuals to enter into part-time doula work with the goal of building into full-time work.
One of the most effective ways to transition into full-time doula work is to offer complementary services. Diversifying what you offer will allow you to grow your business into full-time work more quickly. Labor & postpartum support, childbirth education, newborn care classes, lactation support, and placenta encapsulation services are all avenues of support that will allow you to more quickly grow your doula business. In addition, the ability to support a client from start to finish through each service you provide is a professionally rewarding and lucrative experience.
Is your goal is to support families in your community during your free time? If so, offering a variety of services allows you more opportunities for providing support. Childbirth education, postpartum support, lactation support, and placenta encapsulation are all services that you can schedule into your free time.
