When it comes to the options for how a family can approach feeding their baby, the options feel infinite. Regardless of their approach, decision fatigue is a very real experience for many families.
In addition, there is so much pressure to make the “right” decision.
While the choice for how to feed the baby is often made before the baby arrives. The real-time process of infant feeding begins at birth. A time where the birthing parent is often tired, sore, and otherwise experiencing the after-effects of the birth process.
As doulas discussion surrounding infant feeding can be most effective for the client when it begins during pregnancy.
Allowing opportunity for discussion surrounding common roadblocks or obstacles can allow parents to consider all options. At a time where they have a clear mind and feel that they are functioning at 100%.
When a parent is physically, emotionally, and psychologically exhausted, something will need to give. However, it doesn’t mean that the parent is ready to give up on the feeding decisions they have made.
As birth professionals, helping the family explore the other options to help them change the current situation is always appropriate. Some families will want to re-assess their goals. Others will want to stay the course but alter the path they will need to take to get there.
